Women’s Tennis Faces Four in Orlando

The Mount St. Mary’s Women’s Tennis team spent their spring break preparing for their spring season. The girls faced four teams over the span of the week they spent in sunny Orlando, Fl.

The women started the week on Monday, March 6 with a match against Western Carolina. The match began by all three doubles teams losing their matches and losing the first point of the match. The team went on to fight hard matches, but ultimately losing the match with a score of 6-1. The one point was earned by freshman Alexa Quintanilla by cruising past her opponent with a score of 6-4, 6-2.

During the next match of the trip, the Mount women faced Grand Valley State at the brand new USTA National Campus facility. The women were defeated in doubles, the first flight, Quintanilla and Sruthi Kamprath, losing in a close match 6-4. With the first point given to Grand Valley State, the women would go on to their singles matches, where they picked up two points, but still came up short in the end with a score of 5-2. Winning for the Mount was Quintanilla, who went into a long three-set match, with a final score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The other point came from freshman Hannah Davis, winning her match swiftly with a score of 6-0, 6-1.

The third match of the trip the Mount was set to face Norfolk State. Norfolk was able to bring five girls to the match. This meant that they would forfeit their third doubles match and their sixth singles match. The Mount earned the doubles point with their win at first doubles when Quintanilla and Kamprath defeated their opponents 6-4. Erin Benefiel and Kelly Smith finished off the earned doubles point by beating Norfolk State with a score of 7-6 and a tiebreaker that was won 7-3. Both Quintanilla and Davis continued their wins to be victorious in singles, Quintanilla with a score of 6-2, 6-4, and Davis with a score of 6-0, 6-0.

On the last day in Florida, the team faced their final opponent, Marian. The Mount was off to a slow start and lost their doubles matches of the day. Slowly, but surely, the Mount came back and won every singles match, making the score of the match 6-1. Quintanilla won her match with a score of 6-0, 6-3. Smith won her match in a grueling three sets. Kamprath won 6-3, 7-5. Benefiel won her match in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, one of the many long matches of the week for her. Davis won her match 6-0, 6-3. Finally, Blake won her match 6-0, 6-2.

The Mount will continue their spring season this weekend when they face Niagara and Saint Francis (Pa). They will continue as they go onto conferences at the end of April.
