Welcome new and returning students! As this semester launches into action, the Career Center would like to reach out and offer their services and expertise to you. Deciding on your future is extremely important; however, thinking about what you are going to do after you graduate does not have to be overwhelming. The goal of the Career Center is to help take away some of that weight and walk side-by-side with students as they begin searching for opportunities and connections in the professional world.
You may already be feeling overwhelmed and have no idea where to start. Maybe you are still deciding on a major, or you are questioning the major you are currently in. By taking a look at your interests and strengths, the Career Center offers guidance in exploring career fields that might appeal to you. A career assessment gives you a better understanding of your personal motivations and possible career directions that would be the most fulfilling to you and your goals.
If you think you may be ready to start applying for internships or jobs, the Career Center can give you access to many opportunities that you may not have known about otherwise. Though emails are often sent with information about available internships, you can also receive help with a more personalized search. Before applying for an internship or job, do not forget to ask for help in creating a resume. You can bring in a draft to be critiqued and get advice on how to make it as strong as it can be.
Once you have an interview in place, the Career Center can also help with making sure you are confident and ready to present yourself as an intelligent and well-equipped individual. You can set up an appointment for a mock interview, where a staff member will ask you questions potential employers might use. This experience will give you an idea of what to expect and how to react to certain questions or situations.
In addition to these services, the Career Center also offers various events and workshops throughout the school year, which are highly beneficial. These workshops include introductions to using LinkedIn, as well as informative sessions about creating resumes and even an etiquette dinner.
This semester looks to be full of fun and excitement, and it is well worth the effort to make time to visit the Career Center. Come in, introduce yourself, and get started on preparing for your future after you graduate, whether in the spring or in four years. The staff are incredibly excited to meet you and looking forward to providing you with information and direction toward valuable connections and promising possibilities.
You are welcome to visit the Career Center without an appointment during walk-in hours which are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1-2pm. The office is located in the corner of McGowan past the mailroom. Regular appointments can be made by calling 301-447-5202 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a wonderful fall semester!
