The Mount St. Mary’s men’s tennis team took on Howard in the team’s spring opener on Feb. 14. The Mountaineers spent their Valentine’s Day traveling to the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation in D.C. The Bison took the doubles point with wins at the number one and two spots.
The team of junior Peter Salomon and senior Adam Salam were defeated in the one spot by a score of 6-3, while sophomore Louis Tonon and junior Austin Blake fell in the two spot by a final of 7-6 (7-2). The Mount surged in the number three doubles spot, with the tag team of sophomore Darren Mast and freshman Brandon Wortkotter reigning supreme over Howard 6-0. Wortkotter continued his success in singles competition, winning in convincing fashion at the six spot in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Salomon won as well at five with a score of 6-1, 6-2. The number four matchup went to the Mountaineers as well, with Tonon grabbing a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The Mount seemed to run into trouble though with the top of Bison’s line-up. Mast was unsuccessful in the three spot, falling 0-6, 7-5, 6-1. Salam went down in the number two hole after a good back-and-forth with his competition, recording a score of 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Blake could not secure the win at the number one spot after being defeated 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in a valiant effort. Those loses gave the Howard Bison a 4-3 win on the day and an all-time record of 9-8 against Mount St. Mary’s. The Mount women’s tennis team will seek revenge for their male counterparts, as they will face Howard on Thursday, April 9th.
