The Mount St. Mary’s men’s basketball team captured their first victory of the season on November 23rd in their home-opener against American University. Just days prior to the win, the Mount faced a difficult test against Maryland-Eastern Shore, where they would come up just short, falling 78-71.The Mountaineers were led by senior guard, Julian Norfleet, who shot 8-16 from the field, leading all scorers with 24 points, to go along with five assists. Sam Prescott chipped in with 17 points and four rebounds in the effort, while Rashad Whack secured six rebounds, to go along with 11 points and three assists. The game remained close throughout its entirety, before Eastern Shore’s Ishaq Pitt scored three of his nine points, putting the game out of reach.
In the Mount’s home opener, the men got off to a hot start, opening with a 23-9 run in the first 12 minutes of the half. American would claw their way back, keeping the score very even throughout the remainder of the game. The Mount would close strong, however, holding off American throughout the last 30 seconds, and taking the game by a score of 68-64. Rashad Whack led all scorers with 17 points, tacking on three rebounds in the process. Sam Prescott and Julian Norfleet would each chip in with 15 points, with Prescott recording a team high nine rebounds, and Norfleet recording three assists and four steals.
